how do i keep bamboo from spreading in my garden?

First of all do you see it spreading 3 or four feet away from the main shoots? If so then It’s running bamboo. If not then don’t worry because clumping will spread some but is easily knocked down.

Disregard the answer that said all bamboo spreads that way…NOT SO!
There are 2 kinds running which is highly invasive and clumping which is not. Second answers was correct about the clumping bamboo.
the barriers have to be made of much thicker material than a couple rows of plastic and much deeper than 18 inches.
You need a rhizome barrier of 30" to 36" no less than 30mil to 60mil plastic.

  1. Now you know why Bamboo is on the Enviromental Protection Agencies list of Noxious Invasive Plants. It sends out root runners and spreads. There aren’t any effective herbicides to eradicate it once it gets started, and it destroys water ways like rivers and creeks when it gets into them. The root system is so matted and massive that Back Hoe Tractors have trouble digging them up.

The only way to stop bamboo spreading is to dig a ditch around the Bamboo, 3 ft. deep and line the ditch with a couple of layers of plastic. The roots hit the plastic barrier and try to grow over it. You can cut them off at the surface of the ground to control it.

Reasearch because neighbor planted Bamboo and didn’t put a barrier around it, now it is invading my fields, and damaging my farm equipment.

  2. actually bamboo is a great valuable resource or has no one wore socks from bamboo or walked on bamboo floors. That said to keep bamboo from spreading there are barriers that can be inserted around bamboo Plastic or metal insert d 18 inches down or you can just trench around it to the area you want it contained in. I grow black bamboo and gold bamboo both are runners they get 15 to 30 feet tall and I harvest it when I need to build things and I am okay with it running
I might add to look for a clumping bamboo as well no worries on running.
    good luck
